Cheerleaders Ditch Skimpy Uniforms After Complaints From Fans
BOISE, Idaho — Less than a month into the football season, the Idaho Vandals are undergoing another makeover after spectators complained that cheerleaders' uniforms were flashing a little more than school spirit.
After the football team dumped the school logo from the buttocks of their new pants, the university in Moscow got complaints that new two-piece cheerleader uniforms were too skimpy.
"A number of fans were concerned that the uniforms were inappropriate," said Bruce Pitman, dean of students. "To be fair, there were a number of fans who liked them."
The outfits that drew controversy, halter tops and short black skirts with white trim, were similar to what an NFL cheerleader might wear, Pitman said.
"I'm not quite sure what will happen to them," he said.
The cheerleaders coach ordered the uniforms and paid for them with $4,200 from a spirit squad fund, part of which is drawn from student fees, Pitman said. The squad has ordered new uniforms with $2,200 in private money, he added.
The new uniform is black and silver with a less revealing halter-style top and a skirt about six inches longer than the ones that cheerleaders debuted earlier this season, said Shelly Robson, an adviser to the spirit squad and a fundraiser for the athletics department.
The previous uniforms didn't flatter every member of the team, and some girls said their outfits were uncomfortable, Robson said.
"Girls are just bigger these days, not everybody's a size zero," Robson said. "We're not being a bunch of prudes."
For Idaho's most recent game, the cheerleaders ditched the skimpier uniforms in favor of black volleyball shorts and football jerseys. The new uniforms are expected to arrive by Oct. 4, when the Vandals host Nevada.
It's the second uniform adjustment for the school this fall.
Earlier this month the football team removed the UI logo sewn onto the seat of the pants after fans complained. Athletic Director Rob Spears says nobody realized earlier how the logo would look.

Clean Mats!
Here's How:
To freshen up: Sprinkle the mat with powder carpet deodorizer following directions. Then vacuum throroughly.
For deeper clean: Use a commercial grade steam cleaner following the directions on the product, but do not use soap with this method.
To sanitize: Use 2 ozs of color safe bleach with 1 gallon of water (test on a small area first before spraying on entire floor). Spray on the carpet only and let stand 10 minutes before using a dry vac. Or you can let the color safe bleach/water mixture dry overnight and use a regular vacuum to get rid of the bleach residue.
What You Need:
Spray Carpet Deodorizer
Commercial Grade Steam Cleaner
Color Safe Bleach
Water
Shop Vac or Dry Vac
Regular Vacuum Cleaner
Keep the "Spirit" of Cheerleading!
National Council for Spirit Safety and Education Newsletter
As we begin another competition season, let’s take a few minutes to remind our cheerleaders and parents about their competition sportsmanship behaviors. Cheerleading is an activity that originally began as a support group and promoted good sportsmanship. At a recent competition I attended, the audience was asked to remain seated when squads were performing, and competition staff were standing at the back of the aisles to keep people from entering while performances were ongoing. Parents refused to stop; adults stood in the aisles talking on cell phones; adults moved in and out oblivious to the fact they were blocking the audience’s views of the performing groups. One parent, when asked to stay back, angrily refused to stop, stomped her way down ten rows of seats, sidled in to the middle of the row and began to complain to her seatmates, gesturing back to the competition staff. Another adult kicked at a cheerleader sitting on the floor of the lobby and directed an expletive at the cheerleader when she did not move out of the way quickly enough.
What has happened to common sense and treating others as we would like to be treated? Education is a key point when dealing with parents and cheerleaders alike. Do not assume people will behave as you expect them to. During parent meetings, give clear expectations of what you expect from parents and cheerleaders as it relates to behavior at competitions. Reading and distributing to parents and cheerleaders the event guidelines for dealing with unsportsmanlike conduct is also important. Coaches, teach parents and cheerleaders (and yourself if necessary!) how to win graciously and how to accept second, third, or fourteenth place. Shaking hands and congratulating winners is done in all sports–yet we don’t often see cheerleaders do this.
Let’s all work to bring sportsmanship back to cheerleading–parents, competitors, and coaches.

Cheer Union World Cup!
Two national cheerleading teams will be representing the United States of America in the 2009 International Cheer Union World Cup of Cheerleading that will take place in Orlando, Florida, April 22-24.
In the next several months, USA Federation for Sport Cheering will be holding a national search for the top 60 cheerleaders in the United States. The outcome of the selection process will feature one all-girl cheerleading team and one coed Dream Team.
"We are looking for all different types of skills and talent for the two teams," says Bill Seely, Executive Director of USA Cheer. "The best cheerleaders, 18 years or older and out of high school, will represent our country.
"
The selection process will contain three stages.
It will start with an application evaluation where applicants will be required to fill out an online application and upload a video of their skills on the USA Cheer website (www. usacheer. net). The applications and videos will be reviewed by the USA Cheer Selection Committee, and a select group will continue to the next round. The USA Cheer hopefuls who are chosen to go to the second round will then be required to attend one of four regional tryouts. Finally, more cuts will be made, and the two USA cheerleading teams will be announced on January 19, 2009.
With an estimated 100 teams and approximately 1,300 participants competing, the International Cheer Union's World Cup will be the largest international cheerleading competition in the world. The competition will hold two cheerleading divisions, elite (level 5) and premier (level 6), as well as two partner stunt divisions, all-girl and coed.
The USA Cheer team will be competing against 35-40 countries that have already committed to this first and only historical event.
Seely says what will make the U.S. team unique is the tryout process. While many countries are simply taking a team that already exists, USA Cheer is using an Olympic format, giving people all over the country a chance to tryout.
“Our application process is unique in that it gives anyone a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete to represent our country,” he explains. “We’re scouring the nation to select the elite few who will form the first-ever USA cheerleading Dream Team; only the best of the best will represent our nation on the world stage.
”
To lead the best cheerleaders in the country, USA has also selected the best coaches to represent the United States. Jomo Thompson, head coach of the University of Kentucky cheerleading squad, will take on the role of coach for the coed Dream Team. Tony Nash, head coach of Morehead State University, will coach the all-girl Dream Team. And James Speed, head coach of the University of Louisville cheerleading squads and owner of Gym Tyme cheer gym, will be contributing to both teams.
Seely said, “Choosing the coaches was a critical step in this process. Our focus as an organization is to support all of cheerleading and to serve community, school-based, and gym-based cheer programs, so it was important that the coaches have a strong background in all areas. We also wanted coaches with a successful track record with college-aged athletes, and these three coaches have won national championships in both the school and all star worlds. We are fortunate to have such great coaches to lead the first ever cheerleading dream team.
”
Once the team is chosen, serious practices and conditioning will be the focus. A workout program will be given to each member of the team to follow throughout the year when they are at home. The team will be flown into Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky for practices periodically throughout the year, with one three-day practice to learn the routine and a two week training session to perfect the routine. The 60 members will then fly down as a team to Orlando, Florida the week of the World Cup.
CEO and founder of Varsity Brands, Jeff Webb, who has been elected President of USA Cheer, says he couldn't be more pleased with the idea of the USA cheerleading teams.
“Establishing USA Cheer and unifying this multi-talented leadership team is an historic, pivotal step toward continuing the steady domestic growth and international expansion of competitive cheer,” Webb says. “USA Cheer will also serve as the United States’ member in the International Cheer Union, promoting growth and safety education around the globe. We couldn’t be more excited about the establishment of this important entity, which will help cheerleading in so many ways.

China trains 200,000 cheerleaders!
China trains 200,000 cheerleaders – for other Olympic teams
By Carol Huang, The Christian Science Monitor 6 hours, 49 minutes ago
Beijing - Cheerleading, the quintessential American act, is relatively new to China.
But that hasn’t stopped the enthusiastic Olympic host from assembling a pep squad of 200,000 volunteers, the largest in Games history, to stir up spirit for any national team that needs it.
It’s one of the bubbliest – and perhaps unlikeliest – ways China hopes to wow its international visitors next month.
Then again, this is the country that has recruited 1.5 million Olympic volunteers and spent $40 billion for its coming-out party – both record-breaking efforts.
“It is almost unheard of in the history of the Olympic movement, [recruiting such a] large number of student cheerleaders to cheer for other countries during the Games,” says Guoqi Xu, author of “Olympic Dreams, China and Sports, 1895-2008,” in an e-mail. “The Beijing Olympic Games has not yet started, but Beijing has created many precedents” already.
Most of the volunteer cheerleaders – which include many retired civil servants – though, have never shaken pom poms in sassy pleated skirts, let alone roused a crowd with victory jumps.
They’ll have some simple dance steps under their belt as well as plastic, noisemaking “cheering sticks” to clap together.
But lest the crowd be unenthused by their routines, or props, Olympics organizers are also preparing 28 elite squads of young women chosen through a nationwide competition and from cheerleading or dance institutes.
The 400 who made the cut will perform “not only as cheerleaders, but also as dancers and acrobats,” the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG) promises on its website.
They’ve been practicing for four to six hours a day at a compound on the outskirts of Beijing since June. To teach them new moves and help them with pep and precision, BOCOG brought in cheerleaders from the storied New England Patriots football team.
Some routines are self-choreographed and throw in some Chinese flair. One group squats and kicks with red fans, flicking them open and shut with a loud whir to Asian-infused techno.
Another squad twirls nunchucks before switching to pompoms mid-song. “Everyone knows cheerleading is a Western activity, but we hope we can find a Chinese way to do it [and] show the world,” says He He, who sports long, dyed-red hair and a sparkly belly-button ring.
How do China’s cheerleaders feel about rooting for other countries?
“My first choice is China,” but I’m happy to cheer for any team, says Yang Xue, who has done cheerleading for one year. Her squad is assigned to basketball, which means a potential courtside glimpse of national sports hero Yao Ming.
We’re teaching them “how to entertain a wide crowd,” and for that, “spirit” and “poisemanship” matter more than the actual dance, says Patriots cheerleader Carrie Binette.
The Chinese trainees appear to have learned that well. When the wrong music begins to play for their practice performance, they hold their positions and smiles. Someone fumbles with the stereo. Silent seconds tick. Then, a burst of enthusiasm. “Yea!” they clap and leap..

A few pointers for tryouts...
Congratulations to those of you that have already survived tryouts and are going to be part of your school's squad next Fall. For those of you with tryouts still coming up... here are a few pointers that will help you out.
1. Practice in the Mirror - Practicing in a mirror is the best way to ensure that your motions and body position (and facial expressions) are correct. While a full length mirror is best... any mirror is better than no mirror.
2. On the day of tryouts don't forget to eat and drink - You're likely to be a little nervous before your tryout... maybe some butterflies in the stomach. Under no circumstances should you not eat. You don't need to have huge meals but you definitely need to eat nutritious meals and snacks throughout the day. This will keep your energy high for your performance. Don't forget to hydrate too... water is best!
3. Wear appropriate attire to tryouts - Cheer shoes, cheer shorts and a tee with your school mascot on it is a simple and clean outfit to wear and will show your spirit while allowing you to show your stuff. (Do check with the coach prior to tryouts to see if there is a required outfit for tryouts - this is especially true for college tryouts.)
4. Be a good sport - Whether you make the team or not, keep everything in perspective and be sensitive to those around you. While you are celebrating your success another prospective cheerleader may be crushed by defeat... keep their feelings in mind too.

3TV gets it right... right 'till the end
3TV's Ben Lemoine put together a story on the ASU cheer squad and ran it during Good Evening Arizona this Friday night. Compared to other news packages regarding the demise of ASU cheer, this one was probably the best... right 'till the end.
At the end of his story Ben told anchor Patti Kirkpatrick that schools like UCLA and USC also have spirit squads. This is the not the first time the future ASU spirit squad was compared to USC and UCLA, John Hook also made the error on Thursday night on Fox 10.
While they might call it a spirit squad at UCLA... they are in fact still cheerleaders... they are allowed to stunt and tumble! Why is no one getting that right?
Despite the error... props go out to Ben for doing by far the best story I saw this week on our local news.
